KOH LIPE

Koh Lipe, Thailand’s not-so-well-kept secret island

Koh Lipe, or “Paper Island,” as it’s known in the local language, is known for having some of the finest beaches in the country. It is an island that is surprisingly developed and yet still not incredibly crowded with tourists. Imagine clear, turquoise waters brimming with schools of vibrantly-colored fish beneath the surface and classic long-tail boats above. Towards the western peninsula, you have an abundance of untouched nature to explore and enjoy, where you might find monks chanting out by the forest temple, Wat Hang Lay, in the late afternoons. Trails and unmarked paths on the western side lead to incredible viewpoints, lovely bar/cafes, and gorgeous beaches. In other words, they’re trails worth exploring.

Koh Lipe is located towards the southern end of Thailand near its border with Malaysia, and is one of the Butang Islands located within the beautiful Tarutao National Marine Park. The island was initially inhabited by Sea Gypsies, or “Chao Ley,” who were the ones to give this island its name. The Sea Gypsies were eventually given a grant to settle down on the island’s eastern beach (Sunrise Beach) and are still there to this day.

WEATHER FORECAST IN KOH LIPE FOR THE UPCOMING DAYS

A RELAXING EVENING AT THE BEACHSIDE WALKING STREET

One of the main locations that grants Koh Lipe its liveliness at night is Walking Street, the island’s town center and place to be well after the sun sets. Walking Street essentially becomes a nighttime microcosm of Thailand’s other islands and cities, with easy-to-find massage parlors to de-stress, bars and restaurants and food markets to quell your hunger for Thai cuisine, and local shops with hand-crafted artisan goods to enjoy. If you’re looking to replenish your energy from being out on the beach all day and trekking through the small western-side jungles, Walking Street is the place to visit.

ONE PARADISE AFTER ANOTHER

The countless breathtaking beaches on this island are each impressive for their own reasons and all beg to be visited while staying on Koh Lipe. First you have the most popular beach, Pattaya Beach, which is typically the most populated area on the island and has more of a buzz to it than the other beaches. Then you have the longest beach on the island, Sunrise Beach, which covers the northern-to-southern shore of the island and (of course) faces the sunrise; Sunset Beach, which is another similarly-peaceful beach on the west side that allows you to catch the sun setting behind the nearby jagged hills of Ko Rawi. In between both of those, to the north of Sunrise Beach, is Karma beach with its lovely vistas of neighboring island Koh Adang. In sum, to visit Koh Lipe is to visit one paradise after another.
